Abortion Risks
Women who have had abortions know of the emotional, physical, spiritual and psychological risks. Abortion is not necessarily “safe” and “easy” as you may frequently hear: Some side effects may occur with abortion and include abdominal pain, cramping, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea . Statistically, complications occur in 1 out of every 100 *reported abortions and in about 1 out of every 50 later *reported abortions. Some of those complications include:

Risks Specific to Surgical Abortions

Infection and Incomplete Abortions
Bacteria may get into the uterus from an incomplete abortion where not all the fetal parts were removed. Bleeding and infection may occur. A serious bacterial infection can lead to a persistent fever and an extended hospital stay. RU486 (the morning after pill) may fail up to 1 out of every 20 cases.

Heavy Bleeding
Some bleeding is normal; however, there is a risk of torn uterine arties and hemorrhaging. In this instance, a transfusion is critical.

Allergic Reaction to Drugs
Allergic reactions to the anesthesia used during the surgery may result in convulsions, heart attack and even death.

Tearing of the Cervix
The cervix may be cut or torn by the surgical instruments.

Scarring of the Uterine Lining
Surgical abortion instruments may cause permanent scarring of the uterine lining.

Perforation of the Uterus
The uterus may be punctured or torn during the abortion surgery. The risk of this complication increases with the length of the pregnancy and if this does occur, major surgery, including a hysterectomy, may be required.

Damage to Internal Organs
When the uterus is punctured or torn, there is also a risk of damage to nearby organs such as the bowel or bladder.

Death
In extreme cases, all of the complications discussed above, can lead to death.

Breast Cancer
More and more research is pointing to a direct link between abortion and breast cancer. Carrying a pregnancy full term drops your risk of breast cancer. Aborting a pregnancy causes a sudden drop in estrogen levels that make breast cells more prone to cancer.

Risks Specific to Chemical Abortions

RU-486
Taking an “abortion pill” sounds so easy . The implication is that you take a pill and don’t have to worry about anything. The reality…it is really an issue of life and death. When a woman takes the RU-486 pill, she will experience severe cramping, nausea, vomiting and bleeding. The spokesperson for the pill’s manufacturer even admits, “There will be considerable pain with this procedure”.

The emotional distress may be even greater though. This procedure is not just over in a “few minutes”. This abortion could last for several weeks. When the woman does finally abort, she will literally expel the body of a tiny dead baby. The psychological impact is overwhelming and the images of the tiny baby are haunting for woman who aborted using RU-486.

The physical complications are also great. The company which patents the drug estimates a complication rate of 1% to 2% annually. Complications include cardiac arrest, incomplete abortions and hemorrhaging, all which could result in death. Regarding hemorrhaging alone, doctors have testified to woman loosing ½ to 2/3 of their blood during an RU-486 abortion. This “safe” procedure has serious dangers for the over 1.5 million woman seeking abortions each year.

Risks to Future Pregnancies

The risk or miscarriage for a future wanted pregnancy is greater for women who have had abortions. In addition, complications from the abortion may entirely prevent or place at risk future pregnancies.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Pelvic inflammatory disease can result in high fever and the inability to become pregnant again (infertility). Pelvic inflammatory disease occurs in 5% of the abortions performed annually.

Etopic Pregnancies
Women who have abortions have a 30% higher risk for tubal or ectopic pregnancies (in the tubes that lead to the uterus). For women who have had more than one abortion, that risk is 4 times greater.

Placenta Previa
Placenta Previa is a very serious abortion related complication. A woman who has had an abortion has a 600% increased chance of having the placenta (the sac that surrounds the baby in the uterus) tear away from the uterine lining during a future pregnancy. Placenta Previa is a life-threatening condition for both the mother and baby.

Infertility
Up to 5% of the woman who have abortions will become infertile. This means they will be unable to become pregnant in the future.

Emotional Consequences

Some woman experience severe emotional complications immediately following an abortion. For other woman, it may not happen for years. This psychological condition is called Post-Abortion Syndrome (PAS) and can result in the woman feeling:

  • Guilt
  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Suicidal Thoughts
  • Anniversary Grief
  • Flashbacks of Abortion
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Relationship Problems
  • Eating Disorders
  • Alcohol and Drug Abuse
  • Psychological Reactions

We have a post-abortion support group and can help you. Please contact us if you have already had an abortion and are experiencing any of these symptoms.

An abortion is not just a medical and lifestyle decision, it also has a profound spiritual impact on woman. You need to consider what your beliefs are and what impact an abortion will have on you spiritually. Guilt, depression and suicide are real complications of abortion that woman suffer when they don’t fully consider the spiritual impact. Visit www.justthfacts.com to get accurate info rmation.
